Delete your account to be famous!

Seriously! It works! And I witnessed it today!

I am quite regular on twitter these days. It is a fun place to be at especially if you are following right people. I follow a few of them, not many celeb tweeter though as they don't tweet anything else apart from the number of times they brush their teeth and hit the gym, or where they are shooting! Ah, really boring!

But my twitter timeline has people like Jhunjhunwala, Sorabh Pant (who happens to be a college friend), G. Khamba, Rohan Joshi, Bollywood Gandu, Bombay Addict to name a few. Now these are fun people to have on your timeline. They are always behind actors, politicians, other tweeters making the timeline interesting and fun to read.

But, what happens when all these people start recommending to follow someone on twitter? Result: 700 followers in three hours. And counting! Same thing happened some time back.

A Tweeter - Dharmesh Gandhi by mistake deleted his twitter account that had 2500 + followers. That's quite a popular one I must say. And almost all the twitter gods started helping him out in getting all the followers back. Everyone started tweeting and requesting their followers to follow Dharmesh so that he gets the followers back! And it worked! This person became famous within an hour and got so many followers! It reminded me of the time when Sachin Tendulkar joined twitter. I had thought nobody could reach there, but I was so wrong!

This guy is reaching heights. By the time I complete this post, he will have another 100 to his list. Now it seems he has promised a free beer to everyone if he reaches 1000 followers today! Hmmm, interesting! I wish I were this famous too. Actually, I am better off without being one, for I do not like to share my beer with anyone!

But this is a weird place. Twitter. People cry so much for followers for themselves and beg of others to RT their tweet. A few amusing nutters you come across who always want fraandship even on twitter where your one tweet does not even exceed 140 characters! and they even manage to flirt in such a short space! They are known as orkutiyas of twitter!

Now this post will get updated on my twitter account too. And I am hoping that these orkutiyas read it and unfollow me! ah, such a crackpot I am! Here people die for followers and I am running away from them! No wonder I am not famous on twitter! But, do I want to be? Nah!

  7. Lol I think twitter is good for bloggers. If it is providing us with topics to write about. And didn't someone tell you? Orkutiyas don't have the patience to read blogs with clear-cut, grammatically correct sentences. So don't be too hopeful they're gonna unfollow you after this. :D

  13. Celebs use twitter to just market themselves, so we should not shy away from doing the same, isn't ?

Who care about the followers, do we?

  15. Hahah... Dharmesh G got made fun of left, right and centre. Many hashtags paid tribute to him deleting his account by mistake.

I'm not sure if I want to be known like that :D

I love twitter. Contrary to popular perception, I've found it to be a place full of interesting people with interesting things to say. And not one filled with one liners or celebs. Have made a few good friends over twitter and we all share a similar sense of humour.

Like all social networking, it's how you use it.

  16. Orkutiyas lol love that term. Should include in urban dictionary :P

I have a friend whose sole mission is to reach 5000 friend limit in FB. He feels he would be a celebrity if he has that number of friend ;) Couple of days I got a screaming call telling to log into his account and find out why he is not accessible through his mobile. when I checked into his account there was a warning from FB for randomly adding strangers :P

  19. Is it that simple? I often find it difficult to visit friendly bloggers due to lack of time.
But it is important to have someone to read what you write.Isn't it so?Some of the best bloggers I have seen do not have many followers. It is all a game,to be truthful.
